Privacy and health research: a clash of European values?

Negotiations on the new EU General Data Protection Regulation are entering their very last rounds. The terms under which data can be processed for research purposes are still up for debate. Autonomy and privacy are at the heart of the debate. But research also needs data in order to improve health care, now and for future generations. Is the plight of solidarity, enshrined as it is into European health care, sufficiently taken into account as well? Together with others, Evert-Ben van Veen wrote a short paper reflecting on the fundamental values underlying the debate on research. You can read the paper over here.
