Vidi grant for Morris Swertz

Dr. Morris Swertz, UMCG Genetica and WP 5 leader of BBMRI-NL 2.0, has been awarded a Vidi grant by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).

Morris will use the grant to develop scalable ‘big data’ methods towards personalized genome diagnostics. New ‘NGS’ techniques can measure all DNA varieties in one go. Unfortunately, so far diagnostics cannot benefit from these new techniques because genetic labs cannot handle the myriads of data. By developing patient-oriented techniques aimed at earlier and better finding harmful mutations the personalized whole genome diagnostics can be further improved.

Together with Veni and Vici, Vidi is part of the NWO Talent Scheme. Vidi is aimed at experienced researchers who, after their PhD, have carried out successful research for a number of years. May 13, 2016, 87 scientists have been rewarded with a Vidi grant. These researchers belong to the best ten to twenty percent in their discipline. With a Vidi grant researchers can do research for a period of five years.
